Sheriff’s Log: Feb. 15 to Feb. 21, 2024

The following is the Avalon’s Sheriff’s Stations significant incidents report for the period of Feb. 15 to Feb. 21, 2024.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.

February 15

  • Deputies responded to a disturbance call on Catalina Avenue. The caller stated it was 6:20 in the morning and there was loud music and construction noise coming from a building nearby.

The deputies located the source of the noise and determined it was a worker cleaning the area with a leaf blower. The man was commended for his “early bird gets the worm” work ethic and then educated on Avalon’s Muni Code. He was extremely apologetic and stated he would shut down his leaf blower for 40 minutes.

February 16

  • Deputies responded to a disturbance on Country Club Drive. The caller stated a male and female were arguing in one of the hotel rooms. The deputies arrived and discovered the feuding couple had already left their room.

The deputies had a description of the couple and located them standing outside a local watering hole. They contacted the man and woman who admitted to being loud stating it was their first night out in 5 years and they have 9 children. The man said he was yelling at his girl to hurry up because he wanted to get downtown and enjoy some cold ones.

The couple was very apologetic and thanked the deputies for being so cool.

February 17

  • Deputies were contacted at the Sheriff’s Station by a man who wanted information on an incident he read about on a Catalina Facebook post. The incident was an alleged assault that occurred approximately 20 years ago. After listening to the man for 1 hour, he was advised the case he was referring to was not handled by Avalon Sheriff’s and was investigated by another unit within the Sheriff’s Department. The deputies were unable to share any information with the man.

February 18

  • Deputies were contacted by an individual with the Harbor Department who stated he saw 2 men arguing and getting ready to fight near Crescent and Sumner. The deputies checked the area and were unable to locate the combatants.

February 19

  • Deputies responded to Hermit Gulch for a vandalism report call. The deputies observed damage to the signage and foliage at the location. The incident was captured on video surveillance and the case is under investigation.

February 20

  • Deputies responded to the beach near Hamilton Cove regarding a vessel that was shipwrecked. The deputies were able to contact the shipwrecked captain who stated his vessel slipped anchor during the stormy weather and drifted ashore. The captain is working on having the vessel recovered and repaired. There were no injuries during the event as the captain and his first mate escaped the drifting vessel on their dingy.

February 21

  • Deputies responded to Hermit Gulch campground at midnight to check the location. The caller stated they could hear a dog barking but they were unable to see if anyone was outside. The deputies were unable to locate anyone and did not hear any noises while at the location.
