Sheriff’s Log: Feb. 12 to Feb. 18, 2020

Editor’s note: The following is the Avalon Sheriff’s Station significant incidents report for the week of Feb. 12 to Feb. 18, 2020. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.

February 12

• Deputies arrested Elia Beltran from Avalon on suspicion of assault after she allegedly walked into a business and assaulted the cashier with her 2-year-old daughter watching. She was arrested in the 100 block of Metropole Avenue. The entire incident was captured on surveillance video.

• Deputies arrested a juvenile from Avalon on suspicion of assault after the juvenile was involved in a fight that was posted on a social media website. Several fights have been posted on the same social media website. Deputies are in the process of arresting all of the fighters.

February 13

• A bicyclist failed to stop for deputies after committing a vehicle code violation. The suspect refused to comply with the deputy and left the scene. The deputy had arrested the suspect in the past so he knew his name. A criminal report is being presented to the District Attorney’s Office and the suspect will have another court date in the near future.

February 14

• Deputies received a call that a 13-year-old student at Avalon School possessed marijuana at school. Deputies arrested the juvenile and released him to his parents.

February 15

• An Avalon resident came into the Avalon Sheriff’s Station and reported that someone in the city of San Pedro used her credit card without her permission. The victim does not know how the suspect obtained her credit card number. The Los Angeles Police Department will be handing the investigation.

• Deputies received a call that a victim in Hamilton Cove had the registration sticker stolen from their vehicle’s license plate.

February 16

• A victim reported that he was scammed out of a little over $800 after receiving a telephone call from a suspect claiming to be from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Avalon Station. The suspect told the victim he had to purchase gift cards from Vons and provide the card numbers or he would be arrested for his warrants. The victim did not have any warrants, but complied with the suspect’s demands.

• Deputies received a call on Tremont Street that a juvenile wanted to hurt herself. Deputies assisted the juvenile by getting her to the mainland where she could be seen by a doctor and get the help that she needed.

February 17

• Deputies and first responders responded to the Carnival Cruise Ship in Avalon Harbor regarding a 38-year-old female from Santa Rosa Valley, California, that died on the cruise ship. The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause of death.

February 18

• Deputies received a report of an assault which occurred in the 100 block of Sumner Avenue. The victim reported the crime several days after it occurred. Deputies are investigating the allegation.

• Deputies received a report of counterfeit $20 bills being passed in the 100 block of Catalina Avenue. A business made a deposit at the bank and learned several of the bills a customer used were counterfeit. The investigation is ongoing.

• Deputies were contacted by a dinghy owner that reported his dinghy missing from Two Harbors. The dinghy was last seen on Dec. 25, 2019, and the victim reported it on Feb. 18, 2020. The whereabouts of the dinghy is unknown.

Safety Note

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will never ask you to pay for anything in gift cards. If you receive a telephone call and the caller claims to be law enforcement and asks you to pay them or you will be arrested, it is a scam. Do not pay. Contact your local law enforcement agency. Do not call any telephone numbers the scammers provide.
