Sheriff’s Log: Dec. 5 to Dec. 8, 2018

Editor’s note: The following is the Avalon Sheriff’s Station significant incidents report for the week of Dec. 5 to Dec. 8, 2018. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.

December 5

• Deputies and Avalon first responders participated in a “table top” training exercise with Southern California Edison. The training scenario dealt with a gas leak in the city. First responders and Southern California Edison working together to keep our community safe.

December 6

• Deputies and the fire departments responded to Machado Field regarding a male that slipped and fell. The male’s injury was minor and he will seek medical attention on his own, if needed.

December 7

• The fire departments and deputies responded to the 100 block of Pebbly Beach Road regarding a structure fire. The fire departments were able to extinguish an electrical fire at the location. There were no injuries.

December 8

• Deputies received a call where two female Avalon residents were fighting in the 100 block of Sumner Avenue. Both females were identified. The investigation is ongoing.

December 9

• Deputies responded to the 200 block of Clarissa Avenue regarding a stranger sleeping on the porch of a residence. The individual was warned regarding trespassing.

December 10

• Deputies were on Pebbly Beach Road when they spotted two males in a dinghy illegally catching lobsters in the protected area of Lover’s Cove.

The suspects saw the deputies and immediately fled the area in their boat.

The deputies were unable to pursue the suspects. Deputies and Harbor Patrol recovered the stolen lobster hoop-nets and released seven live lobsters. The investigation is ongoing.

December 11

• The Sheriff’s Department’s Arson and Explosives Detail came to the island and conducted a fire investigation regarding the electrical fire that occurred on Dec. 7, 2018.

Safety Note

If you have a natural Christmas tree, water it to keep it fresh and safe.

Real trees can dry up and turn into kindling in no time at all. Get rid of the tree after Christmas.

Dried out trees are a fire hazard and should not be left in the home.
