Sheriff’s Log: Dec. 16 to Dec. 22, 2021

Editor’s note: The following is the Avalon Sheriff’s Station significant incidents report for the week of Dec. 16 to Dec. 22, 2021. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.

December 16

• Deputies responded to the 300 block of Clemente Avenue regarding a vandalism call where someone threw a rock at a window, breaking the glass.  A report was taken and the incident is under investigation.

• A female walked into the station’s lobby regarding her and her boyfriend arguing.  Deputies contacted both parties and counseled them.  There was no crime, just a verbal argument.

• Deputies responded to the 400 block of Avalon Canyon Road regarding loud Karaoke music.  The parties were warned, advised and complied.

December 17

• Deputies received a call regarding a welfare check on a juvenile.  The juvenile was later located on the mainland and participating in sporting activities and supervised by his coach.

December 18

• Deputies responded to a fight in front of the station.  All parties were non desirous and released.

• Deputies were dispatched to 1 Cabrillo Mole regarding a male and female pulling a knife out on one of the employees.  Both parties were refused service and weren’t allowed on the vessel until the following day.

December 19

• Deputies responded to a welfare check on the 300 block of Tremont Street, and were met by the party and they were fine.

• Dispatch received a call of a husband and wife arguing in front of the 300 block of Sunny Lane.  The call turned out to be friends arguing in front of the location only.

• Deputies were dispatched to a reported spousal assault call in progress on the 300 block of Tremont Street.  When deputies approached, they heard a female screaming “Stop, stop!” while at the front door of the apartment.  Suspect opened the door and yelled expletives at the deputies and told them they could not come in and slammed the door closed.  The suspect was bleeding from his mouth and the female victim was standing behind him.  The victim opened the door, while holding a baby, and noticed the victim had redness, blood and a scratch on her cheekbone.  While trying to arrest the suspect, he attempted several times to get away from the deputies causing all of them to fall down the stairs.  One deputy had to pepper spray the suspect in order to subdue him from fighting.  Corey Hernandez, 30, of  Avalon, was arrested and booked at Avalon Station on suspicion of spousal assault and resisting arrest.

December 21

• Deputies responded to the Descanso Beach Club regarding a person loitering on Catalina Island Company property.  When they arrived, they saw the suspect in the center of the grass area.  Deputies recognized the person as one that has been served a “Letter of Agency” prohibiting him the eating or loitering at any of Catalina Island Company’s properties.  Matthew Beach, 41, of Avalon, was booked on suspicion of trespassing and was booked at Avalon Sheriff’s Station.

December 22

• Deputies were flagged down by a Catalina Express employee at 1 Cabrillo Mole.  Employees had found narcotics in the waiting area adjacent to the ticket counter.  The narcotics were recovered and placed into evidence.
