Editor’s Note: The following is the Avalon’s Sheriff’s Stations significant incidents report for the period of Aug. 22 to Aug. 28, 2024. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.

August 22

• Deputies responded to the 300 block of Tremont Street regarding a possible domestic violence incident. Deputies contacted all involved parties and determined there was probable cause to believe a crime had occurred. Juana Rodriguez, 58 of Avalon, California was arrested on suspicion of spousal battery.

August 23

  • Deputy personnel performed targeted traffic enforcement of electric, non-street legal, dirt bikes near the intersection of Metropole and Beacon Avenue.

August 24

  • Deputies responded to a hotel on the 100 block of Sumner Avenue regarding a disturbance call between two women sharing a room. The deputies separated the two parties to determine if a crime had occurred.

The deputies advised both parties to separate for the rest of the evening.

One of the roommates was able to rent another room for the night. Both parties seemed happy with the new living arrangements and decided to enjoy the next day on the island separately.

August 25

  • While walking in front of the Sheriff’s Station, a sergeant noticed a couple arguing on Sumner Avenue. The sergeant contacted the involved parties to make sure they were okay. Both parties stated they had been drinking alcohol for a few hours.

After determining no crime had occurred, both parties were advised to return to their hotel for the evening. The parties decided that was a great idea and walked back to the hotel.

  • Deputies responded to a hotel on the 100 block of Sumner Avenue regarding a possible domestic violence call. Deputies contacted a female who stated she had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The boyfriend had left the location prior to the deputies arriving. Deputies obtained a description of the suspect and began searching for him. He was later located at the Mole trying to leave the island. Benjamin Pringle, 40 of San Clemente, California was arrested on suspicion of spousal battery.
  • Deputies responded to the 300 block of Clemente Avenue regarding a possible domestic violence call. The deputies located the couple described in the call. The parties were separated by deputies.

After determining it was a verbal confrontation only, and no crime had been committed, the deputies advised both parties that yelling at each other, especially at 2:15 in the morning, is probably not the best way to resolve a problem. The involved parties agreed and advised the deputies they would keep the noise down for the rest of the night.

  • Deputies responded to the Blue Water Restaurant regarding a patrol who had refused to pay her bill. The woman had left the location prior to deputies arriving. A sergeant later located her at Veterans Park and detained her. After the detained female had a change of heart and decided to pay her bill, the Blue Water advised they did not want to press charges.

August 26

  • Deputy personnel concentrated on traffic enforcement on Avalon Canyon Road. Traffic stops were made, and drivers were cited for vehicle code violations.
  • Deputy personnel noticed an individual walking near the 100 block of Catalina Avenue holding an open alcoholic beverage. The alcohol was confiscated, and the individual was given a citation for being in possession of an open container of alcohol.

August 27

  • Deputy Duong and the Captain joined Mayor Marshall and Fire Chief Alegria in welcoming the students back on the first day of the school year. We are excited to assist teachers, administrators, parents, and students in any way that can help our students to be as successful as possible.

August 28

  • Deputies worked foot beats on Crescent Avenue to ensure the safety and security of the public, and increased traffic enforcement near Sumner Avenue and Beacon Street.
