Sheriff’s Log

Editor’s note: The following is the Avalon Sheriff’s Station significant incidents report for the week of Jan. 29 to Feb. 4, 2020.  All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.

January 29

• Deputies issued three parking citations for vehicles parked against red no parking curbs.  The violations occurred in the 100 block of Whittley Avenue and on Tremont Street.

• An Avalon resident turned in a handgun they owned for safe keeping.  The owner of the gun did not feel comfortable having the gun in their residence.

• Deputies responded to the 200 block of Sumner Avenue regarding a victim who had her blue jacket stolen from her baby stroller.

January 30

• Deputies responded to the 100 block of Metropole Avenue regarding a juvenile that did not want to return to school.  When the deputies arrived, the juvenile agreed to go to back to school.

January 31

• Deputies responded to the 200 block of Beacon Street regarding two guests involved in an argument.  Deputies learned the two were boyfriend and girlfriend.  They were only arguing, and no criminal laws had been violated.

February 1

• Deputies received a call of a vandalism in the 300 block of Whittley Avenue.  Deputies learned someone cut the electrical wires to the victim’s golf cart.  The victim believes she knows who did it.  The investigation is ongoing.

February 2

• Deputies issued a parking warning for a vehicle that was left at 1 Casino Way for over 72 hours.  There were cobwebs all over the vehicle.

February 3

• Deputies received a call of a person having mental health issues in the 100 block of Sumner Avenue.  The man was running through the city causing a disturbance.  Deputies located the man and he was placed on a mental evaluation hold so he could get the help that he needed.

• Deputies and first responders (Harbor Patrol, Avalon Fire Department, LA County Baywatch and LA County Fire Department) received a call of a man in the ocean in distress.  The man was clinging onto large rocks while the high surf hit him.  LA County Baywatch personnel were able to get a life vest and helmet on the man before pulling him to safety.  The man did not suffer serious injuries.

February 4

• Deputies responded to a family disturbance call in the 200 block of Bird Park.  The deputies’ investigation revealed a juvenile was in violation of school truancy laws and had assaulted her mother.  The juvenile was arrested and released to her parents.  The investigation is ongoing.

Safety Note

Please talk to your children about the hazards related to children fighting and the possible consequences of posting the videos on the internet.  When the deputies identify the parties involved, deputies will arrest everyone involved that have broken the law.
