Editor’s note: The following is the Avalon Sheriff’s Station significant incidents report for the week of Oct. 14 to Oct. 20, 2020.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.
October 14
• Deputies were called to a residence in the 250 block of East Whittley Avenue regarding stolen money. It was reported by the caretaker of the residence that the money was missing. There were no signs of anything else being taken or forced entry into the residence. The investigation is ongoing.
October 15
• Deputies, fire departments, and Rangers responded to a lost hiker call. A lone 22-year-old female was lost, it was getting dark and she was scared. After searching for two hours, the female was safely located above the Botanical Gardens.
October 16
• Deputies responded to 100 Falls Canyon Road regarding two juveniles trying to steal a golf cart. When a witness yelled at the two juveniles, they ran off.
• Deputies responded to Avalon Canyon Road and Bird Park Road regarding a golf cart that collided into a fence and two juveniles were seen running from the golf cart, possibly the same two juveniles. Later, deputies contacted two juveniles that matched the description and identified them. Surveillance video is being obtained and the investigation is ongoing.
• Deputies and the fire departments responded to 888 Country Club Drive regarding a 24-year-old female not breathing. Paramedics were able to revive the female and transport her to the hospital. Deputies found a substance believed to be heroin in the hotel room next to the female.
October 17
• Deputies responded to 1 Cabrillo Mole regarding a female assaulting a male. Deputies arrested Sarahi Mendoza, 25, of Pomona, on suspicion of domestic violence assault against her boyfriend. Deputies also arrested Ivan Corona, 27, of Pico Rivera on suspicion of being drunk in public during the same call for service.
October 18
• Two Harbor’s deputies responded to Big Geiger Cove regarding possible illegal lobster fishing. Deputies issued citations to two men, one from Murrieta and the other from Malibu, for not having a lobster license and taking under sized lobster.
October 19
• Deputies and the fire departments responded to the 100 block of Clarissa Avenue regarding a traffic collision where a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle. The pedestrian was transported to the hospital and the deputies are conducting a traffic collision investigation.
October 20
• Deputies responded to the 400 block of Crescent Avenue regarding a customer arguing with an employee over his bill. Ultimately, the customer agreed to pay his bill in lieu of being arrested.
