The American Red Cross will be offering classes in disaster shelter operations next week as part of the “Great Shakeout” state-wide earthquake drill. The classes, conducted in cooperation with the Avalon Lions Club, will include a disaster shelter simulation.

First, a Shelter Fundamentals class will be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Parish Hall at St. Catherine’s. The following day a shelter simulation drill will be conducted from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. also at the Parish Hall.

Local Red Cross Volunteer Jim Watson encourages anyone who wants to become a Red Cross volunteer to attend.

“This class and the simulation are good stepping-stones toward becoming a Red Cross volunteer,” said Watson. “But even if you don’t wish to become a volunteer, all are welcome and encouraged to participate. It can only help us all if and when a disaster strikes.”

Food and beverage will be provided on both days. There is no charge to participate in either the class or the shelter drill.
