Preliminary March 2020 election results for Avalon candidates

Mayor Marshall on path to re-election; voters reject sales tax and advise against expanding cannabis legalization

Many Avalon election votes were decisive: Anni Marshall was decisively re-elected with 62.41 percent of the votes in the mayoral race, according to the Los Angeles County Registrar Recorder/County Clerk website.

Past council member Michael Ponce won the special election for the seat vacated by the unexpected death last year of Pam Albers.

Voters rejected the sales tax with 62.41 percent of the votes.

In response to two advisory ballot measures, voters also rejected legalizing recreational cannabis and rejected allowing storefront sales of either medical or recreational cannabis.

As of Thursday morning, March 5, Lisa Lavelle had received 25.75 percent of the votes in the regular City Council race. Oley Olsen received 24.05 percent.

These results, and the ones reported below, are considered preliminary.

The Registrar’s Office has 30 days to certify the elction results.

“After election night in a statewide election, there are thousands of ballots that need to be counted, including vote by mail ballots received on election day, provisional ballots, write-in ballots and damaged ballots,” according to the Registrar’s website.

“These ballots are counted during the 30-day period known as the official election canvass. Ballots require additional review to verify voters are eligible to vote and write-in ballots were cast for qualified candidates,” according to the Registrar’s website.

The following results were taken from the Registrar’s website. The Islander is presenting the Avalon election results first, followed by other election results.
