Outdoor dining to continue

The City Council unanimously approved continuing Avalon’s outdoor dining program to June 2024, unless the city manager or the council rescinds the program sooner.

The staff proposal called for eight tables and 32 chairs (for both the “shoulder” and summer seasons).

“I’m all for this,” said Councilmember Cinde MacGugan Cassidy.

Councilmember Lisa Lavelle said she didn’t want to end the program and didn’t want to limit the number of tables.

Mayor Anni Marshall initially said she wanted to reduce the number of chairs. “I would like to be 24,” she said.

However, she later said she would not vote “no” because of her preference for 24 chairs.

Cassidy wanted to go with the numbers in the staff recommendation. “I would love to see how this works without having all the stress of COVID attached to it,” she said.

“If we have a problem or a concern arises, bring it back,” she said.

“We can always bring it back,” said Councilmember Michael Ponce.

Councilmember Yesenia De La Rosa asked who was responsible for dealing with trash overflow.

City Clerk Denise Radde said the restaurants themselves.
