Avalon has had a love hate relationship with Internet for some time. It makes Island life more integrated with the world, but chronic Internet issues have plagued many homes and businesses: poor coverage, low effective bandwidth and speed, lots of buffering, service interruptions, and on and on. But a couple things have changed recently that have made Internet Service in Avalon far better than in the past.

Catalina Cable now offers 100 mbs download service, which if implemented properly in the home with the latest router technology, supports multiple streaming devices simultaneously. And a new business on the island, Avalon Smart Homes, has made set up with the latest technology for Internet, smart devices, audiovisual systems, and security a fast, simple, and effective process.

Enter Austin Henry, an Internet and audiovisual technology specialist who started his new island business in March of 2022.

Austin was born in Thousand Oaks, CA, grew up in San Diego, CA, and moved to Avalon in November 2019, where he hunkered down during the pandemic as a single dad. His girlfriend, Karla Lupo, does personal training and in-home massage. This dynamic duo has five kids between them as well as running their businesses, so they have very active, busy lives, and they both love living in Avalon. After hearing so many people talk about their Internet issues, Austin saw an opportunity to make use of his technical skills and start the new business. He was a past manager at Circuit City, and for the past decade has worked for Bose and Sony.

“The latest mesh technology for in home use has revolutionized Internet in the home,” Austin explained. “You can now set up a system which seamlessly passes your signal from room to room, to your basement, decks, and backyards, with many people and devices logged in at the same time. It really makes your Internet rock.”

One of Austin’s recent customers, long time island resident Cliff Hague, commented: “I’ve had lots of Internet issues over the past few years. I upgraded to the fastest service with Catalina Cable, but still had problems…probably because I had so many smart devices like lightbulbs, Alexa, etc., and had to reset the system regularly. After Austin installed the new mesh system, I’ve had zero issues! Everything works. It has made a huge difference in my frequent Zoom meetings. I even tested streaming video on two TVs, an iPad and iPhone simultaneously … and no buffering!”

Diane Ferguson, a part-time Islander, added, “Austin put in two new routers and greatly improved my internet speed and installed a fire stick in my living room TV. Alexa now gives me access to all my smart home devices. He was on time and a hard worker. He also took the time to explain all the extra features to me. It was a pleasure doing business with Avalon Smart Homes.”

When asked about his business philosophy, Austin said, “I am totally oriented towards a positive customer experience. If I can’t get someone’s system working so well that it meets or exceeds their expectations, there’s no charge. But so far that’s never happened.”
