As of 9:44 a.m., Friday, Dec. 29, the petition to “Stop the Slaughter of Mule Deer on Catalina Island” had gathered 15,863 signatures. The petition was created by the Coalition Against the Slaughter of Catalina Deer. The group’s gofundme page has raised $15,605 of a $50,000 goal.

The petition is addressed to the director of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and 11 other DFW officials, including the Fish and Game Commission. However, the commission has no say in whether the permit to allow the Catalina Island Conservancy to eliminate the Island’s entire mule deer population will be approved. The decision belongs to DFW staff.
