Medical cannabis to return to council

City staff will ask the council to resubmit the request for proposals for licensed medical cannabis in Avalon this month.

During City Manager David Maistros’ report to the Dec. 17 council meeting, Maistros said 4 p.m., Monday, Dec. 16, was the deadline to apply for an open medical cannabis business in town. (Avalon voters rejected recreational cannabis years ago.)

However, he said the city had not received timely applications.

Maistros said the city received partial applications and fees from two applicants who expressed their interest.

Maistros said they weren’t able to fully complete the applications by deadline.

“However, because they have made their intention and desire known to the city, what we would like to do is come back to the council next month at the next council meeting and request to resubmit the RFP [request for proposals] to open it back up,” Maistros said.

Maistros said he was sure both applicants would want the opportunity to apply.

“We probably would not recommend keeping it open as we did this first time around because I think everybody did have a chance but with the holidays and other things, we don’t want to extend that,” Maistros said.
