Margaret G. Hall Scholarship Golf Tournament makes its mark

For the 13th consecutive year, the Margaret G. Hall Scholarship Golf Tournament raised over $2,000 to support their annual scholarship given to an Avalon High School graduating senior boy who participated in the Avalon Boys Varsity Basketball Program and has demonstrated exceptional leadership and performance both on and off the court.

The tournament has raised over $30,000 in the last 13 years and has awarded over 20 student/athletes from the school.  The number 13 is especially significant since Margaret herself, had 13 children. Those 13 children have grown into a family of over 50 grandchildren and great grandchildren.

This year’s scholarship recipient is Cristobal Hernandez. Cristo will attend Long Beach State University in the fall and proudly accepts the $2,000 award. Through his hard work in the classroom, at school, in the community, on the football field and in the gym Cristo has earned many scholarships that will help him pursue his academic dreams. The Hall family is certainly proud of their choice as well.

The money was raised at our annual golf tournament consisting of Hall family members and friends of the family. Many local businesses contributed prizes to our raffle which raised over $400. In addition, the new owners of the Catalina Island Golf Course gave us an incredible green fee for the tournament, which helped generate even more funds to the cause. All in all, we raised over $2,000 and a great time was had by family and friends.

The golf tournament set off a weekend of fun and fraternity with the Hall Family Reunion taking place on Saturday at Hamilton Cove Beach. The weekend provides an opportunity for many Halls to reacquaint with their old islander friends as well as spend some quality time with family members. This year’s reunion was especially significant as we mourn the loss of our local Mom icon, Maui Hernandez.

The Hernandez’ and the Halls have been very close over the years and we offer our heartfelt condolences to the entire family for their great loss.

The golf tournament and the entire weekend are a testimony to the generosity and love of the entire Avalon community combined with the ever-growing Hall family. I know that our Mom and Dad would be proud of the positive effect their family continues to have on our Avalon community. Thank you, Avalon!
