Quillan Lopez, 28, was arrested at 3:30 p.m., on Sumner Avenue, in front of the Avalon Station of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, for possession of drug paraphernalia.

“Subsequent to his arrest, deputies discovered a quantity of methamphetamine concealed on his person,” said Capt. Doug Fetteroll, commander of the Avalon Sherrif’s Station.

“He was additionally charged with possession of methamphetamine and possession for sales of methamphetamine.  No other information is available as this case is part of an ongoing narcotics investigation,” Fetteroll said.

According to the Drug Enforcement Agency, methamphetamine is a stimulant.

As of Tuesday, Dec. 10, Lopez was in custody at the North County Correctional Facility while he waits for his first court appearance.

“His bail was set at $175,000,” Fetteroll said.

He also said that the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office had filed one felony count of possession for sales of methamphetamine.

“There has not been a noticeable increase in methamphetamine related activities,” Fetteroll said.

Capt. Fetteroll provided the Catalina Islander with Avalon drug-related arrest figures since June:

• June – 1 felony drug arrest and 2 misdemeanors

• July – 2 felony drug arrests

• August – 2 felony drug arrests

• September – no drug arrests

• October  – no drug arrests

• November – 3 felony drug arrests and 1 misdemeanor

• December – 1 felony drug arrest

“So as you can see we average about two drug arrests each month,” Fetteroll said.

Methamphetamine is a stimulant, according to the Drug Enforcement Agency.

“Those who smoke or inject it report a brief, intense sensation, or rush  Oral ingestion or snorting produces a long-lasting high instead of a rush, which reportedly can continue for as long as half a day,” according to “Drugs of Abuse: A DEA Resource Guide ”

“Chronic meth abusers exhibit violent behavior, anxiety, confusion,  insomnia, and psychotic features including paranoia, aggression,  visual and auditory hallucinations, mood disturbances, and  delusions — such as the sensation of insects creeping on or  under the skin,” said the DEA book.

“Such paranoia can result in homicidal or suicidal thoughts.”

“High doses may result in death from stroke, heart attack, or  multiple organ problems caused by overheating,” the book said.
