Luau Larry’s, Straight Up Builders win in softball play

Catalina CoEd Softball took the field last night, and these intrepid players did not let unexpected scattered showers stop them from playing. Game one was between Luau Larry’s and Coyote Joe’s. Luau Larry’s came out hot and scored three runs on three base hits and two walks. Luau Larry’s added another run in the second inning.

The third inning saw one more run for Luau Larry’s. Coyote Joe’s got on the board in the fourth inning when Nestor Cubillas opened with a triple and was followed by the two-run home run from Anthony Hernandez. An error turned into a run for the third run of the inning.

Luau Larry’s got back on the board in the fifth when Marcus Watts started it off with a double, followed by a triple from Ben Guzman, who later scored. Four base hits and a three-run home run from Ben Guzman totaled five runs for the inning. Coyote Joe’s answered back with three runs off two base hits and doubles from Anthony Hernandez and Hugh Bevins. A double play by Luau Larry’s ended the inning.

In the seventh and final inning, Luau Larry’s added to their lead with five runs off three base hits, a double from Marcus Watts, and another home run, this time for two RBIs from Ben Guzman. With their last at bat, Coyote Joe’s Anthony Hernandez stepped up the plate with two on, and promptly hit it over the fence. Two quick outs followed, and the game ended with the score of Coyote Joe’s 9, Luau Larry’s 17.

For Coyote Joe’s, Anthony Hernandez collected three hits. Nestor Cubillas had two hits. Hugh Bevins, Ron Bevins, Francisco Bravo, Rachel Mc Cormick and Chela Hernandez all contributed one hit.

For Luau Larry’s, Ben Guzman collected four hits. Gabriel Alvarado, James Hall and Marcus Watts had three hits. Shawn Hall contributed two hits, while Julian Tejeda, Sloane Clivton and Tiffany Credel had one hit.

Game two was another sometimes-soggy game between Straight Up Builders and Bravo’s Landscaping. Straight Up Builders brought home a run in the first before the double play by Bravo’s Landscaping. Bravo’s Landscaping answered with a two-run home run from Justin Hernandez in the bottom of the inning.

Chuy Sillas hit an RBI double for Straight Up Builders in the third. Bravo’s Landscaping kept pace with a run, off a walk, a base hit and two fielder’s choice. In the top of the fourth, Bravo’s Landscaping turned a double play to keep Straight Up Builders off the board. Bravo’s Landscaping then hit three base hits to score a run in the bottom of the inning.

In the fifth inning Straight Up Builders woke up with a vengeance and rallied for seven base hits, doubles from Omar Aguilar and Selina Morones along with a walk to score nine and take the lead. In the bottom of the inning Tyler Engel hit an RBI triple and later scored.

Straight Up Builders put two more on the board in the sixth. Bravo’s Landscaping continued to battle and had four runs score on two base hits and doubles from Justin Hernandez, Tyler Engel and Caitlin Lopez.

Straight Up Builders added two more in the seventh off a walk, a base hit, and a double from Brandon Franco. With their last at bat, a run home and two out, Bravo’s Landscaping’s Caitlin Lopez hit a double, and scored on Marco Gallegos’ two-run home run. A flyball recorded the last out with the score Bravo’s Landscaping 13, Straight Up Builders 15.

For Bravo’s Landscaping Marco Gallegos was five for five. Tyler Engel was three for three with a walk. Caitlin Lopez also collected three hits. Justin Hernandez, Nick Morones and Melissa Schafer had two hits. Jack Villagomez, Enrique Bravo and Viktor Martinez contributed one hit.

For Straight Up Builders Chuy Sillas, Brandon Franco and Briana Morones had three hits. Juan De La Cruz, Alvin Pol, Alex Herrera, Selina Morones and Betty Tejeda all collected two hits. Omar Aguilar had one hit.
