Catalina Island resident Susan George reeled in more than just a fish this week — she snagged local celebrity status after landing a 40-pound white seabass on a charter fishing trip aboard the Mojo, captained by Martin Ruiz.
The impressive catch marks the first white seabass of the season, making waves not only for its size but for the angler’s surprising inexperience — this was only Susan’s second fishing trip ever.
Using just 12-pound test line and squid for bait, George’s feat has left seasoned fishermen stunned and the town buzzing. “It’s safe to say she’s the envy of the island right now,” said one local.
Susan, understandably thrilled, called the experience unforgettable. “I’m still in shock,” she said with a wide grin. “It was a fight, but totally worth it.”
With her name now circulating through bait shops and dockside cafes, Susan decided to celebrate the catch in true island fashion. She brought her seabass to local seafood favorite, The Lobster Trap, where the kitchen prepared a special feast for Susan and eleven of her closest friends.
“They did it up beautifully — grilled, blackened, and even a sashimi-style starter,” she said. “It was such a fun night. I think the whole table was as proud as I was.”
One thing’s for sure: whether on the water or around the dinner table, Susan George has hooked the attention — and admiration — of Catalina.
