Library Friends seeking new members

The Friends of the Avalon Library is encouraging residents and Catalina Island visitors to join the library support group. With the current drastic budget cuts in Los Angeles County, it is important that the Avalon Library have an organized group of people who are interested in the Library and are willing to commit support through their time and money. The Avalon Friends group supports this library through volunteer work and fund raising.

Volunteers are needed to read to shut-ins, hospital patients and children.

The Avalon Friends will need help with the semiannual used book sales in front of the Library. Perhaps the best thing Friends of the Library do is become an advocate for reading.

With the proliferation of electronic entertainment many young people do not know the joy of a good book.

The Avalon Friends of the Library funds the popular Children’s Summer Reading Program, supplies current bestselling novels, and purchases selected new DVDs for Avalon Library patrons to rent.

Also funded are a variety of educational programs throughout  the year. These programs bring to the Island experts in areas such as adult computer operation and  children’s programming.

Members of the Avalon Friends receive online newsletters highlighting activities, new books and DVDs. Friends Members will be admitted to the twice yearly used book sales in advance of the general public. Friends Members also receive a 50 percent discount on Friends DVD Rentals.

There are several membership categories to chose from: individual at $15, family at $25, student at $5, sponsor at $100 and patron at $500. You may pick up a membership form at the Avalon Library.  The membership is good for one calendar year and may be renewed each January. The Friends of the Avalon Library is a California nonprofit Corporation and your financial support is tax deductible.

Friends Board meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 5 p.m. in the Avalon Library, members are welcome to attend. General membership meetings are held quarterly in conjunction with a library activity or special program.
