A letter from a hospital board member

File art

Dear Avalon City Council:

At the special meeting regarding the hospital, the CEO made an extensive presentation as to why our hospital is always in a precarious position financially.

Look around-half the restaurants and activities are closed for the winter. They send all their workers home and turn off the lights to save money because the winter is not profitable.

The hospital cannot do that. That is one reason why it has nearly closed several times in the past.

The presentation was to be clear that no matter what is done, this will keep happening if we do not access funding other small hospitals are granted.

Instead of listening, council people suggested that the CEO is paid too much and should give back his salary. The council harangued the CEO, suggesting things he has already done and grilling him on what happens to the money. Really? You think this board does not ask the same questions and make similar suggestions? The hospital is audited every year regarding money and audited all the time on various other health aspects. Diabetes therapy, for example [Councilmember] Mary [Schickling], has been looked into by us every year.

To attack Jason [Paret] is cruel and malicious. To create suspicion and innuendo is hurtful and counterproductive.

Judy Grear,

Board member
