Leave it to Leo, Sunset reach tourney finals

Tournament play has begun in the Catalina CoEd Softball League. First game featured League Champion Leave it to Leo Handyman taking on Straight Up Builders.

Straight Up Builders were up first and used an error and doubles from Sebastian Sanchez and Tyler Engel to bring home two. In the second inning Straight Up Builders had three runs score off four base hits and a double from Dillon Gleber.

In the bottom of the inning Luis Lazaro collected an RBI for Leave it to Leo Handyman off his double. Tyler Engel led off the third with a double for Straight Up Builders, but was left stranded.

In the fourth inning Leave it to Leo Handyman rallied to take the lead with five runs off a walk, two base hits and doubles from Robert Reyes, Leo Aguilar and Luis Lazaro. Leave it to Leo Handyman added three more in the fifth, using a walk, a base hit, an error and doubles from Johnny Hernandez and Nestor Cubillas.

In the top of the sixth Straight Up Builders put together two base hits and a home run from Brandon Franco to bring home three. Leave it to Leo Handyman kept the pressure on with a walk, three base hits, a double from Johnny Hernandez and a home run from Marco Gallegos scoring five in the bottom of the inning.

Straight Up Builders got their last at bat, and had two base hits, but left both stranded to end the game with the score Straight Up Builders 8, Leave it to Leo Handyman 14.

For Straight Up Builders Tyler Engel was three for three. Sebastian Sanchez and Dillon Gleber contributed two hits. Uriel Castillo, Brandon Franco, Paul Daniel Romo, Julio Chavoya, Irving Aldaco and Brittany Randall had one hit.

For Leave it to Leo Handyman Nestor Cubillas and Luis Lazaro were three for three. Leo Aguilar and Johnny Hernandez had two hits. Robert Reyes, Marco Gallegos, Santiago Martinez, Edmundo Vega and Matilda Martinez collected one hit.

Game two featured Buoys & Gulls facing Sunset Bar & Grill. Buoys & Gulls got off to a fast start, with five base hits and a double from Hugh Bevins scoring five. Sunset Bar & Grill put two on the board in the bottom of the second, using doubles from Jose Merino, Rafael Silva and Maddie Hiniker.

Buoys & Gulls had two base hits and a double from Joey Yakubec in the third to score two. Sunset Bar & Grill answered with a run, off two base hits and a double from Jose Octavo. Julian Tejeda made the highlight reel in the bottom of the fourth with his fully laid out leap to catch a hard line drive for the third out.

In the bottom of the fifth inning Sunset Bar & Grill crept closer, with three runs off three walks, a base hit and a second double from Rafael Silva. Buoys & Gulls added two more in the top of the sixth off the solo home run from Joey Yakubec, a double from Hugh Bevins, and an RBI base hit.

Sunset Bar & Grill rallied in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. They had a walk, three base hits, doubles from Rafael Silva (his third of the night), Jack Villagomez and Maddie Hiniker to bring home seven. Buoys & Gulls got their last at bat, but failed to get any runners on. The game ended with the score Buoys & Gulls 9, Sunset Bar & Grill 13.

For Buoys & Gulls Joey Yakubec was three for three. Juan De La Cruz, Weston Leonhardi, Hugh Bevins and Missy Schafer collected two hits. Chuy Sillas and Ron Bevins had one hit.

For Sunset Bar & Grill Maddie Hiniker collected four hits. Julian Tejeda and Rafael Silva were three for three. Jose Octavo and Carmelo Lazaro contributed two hits. Gabriel Alvarado, Ryan Adkins, Ben Guzman, Jose Merino and Jack Villagomez had one hit.

The tournament finals were played on Thursday (past our press time).
