League play heating up for Lancer hoops

Avalon girls hold early lead in Academy race

The Avalon High girls basketball team has taken an early lead in the Academy League race, going 2-0 in their first two games.

The Lancers have league wins over Western Christian and Newport Christian. In the win over Newport Christian, Xemina Moreno led the Lancers with 25 points in a 39-28 win over the Seahawks on Dec. 11. Moreno had three three-point field goals in her performance. On Dec. 15, the Lancers defeated the Western Christian Fighting Lancers, 41-39, led by Elizabeth Hiniker with 16 points and Moreno with 14. Giselle Carillo added four points and Victoria Lerma chipped in three.

The Lancers are back in league play on Saturday with a road game at The Webb Schools in Claremont, starting at 11 a.m. They will then host San Gabriel Academy on Monday, starting at 2 p.m. They are back on the road on Thursday, travelling to Newport Christian for a 1 p.m. game. The Lancers won the Academy League title last year with a 7-1 record.

Boys soccer showdown today

The Avalon High boys soccer team is set to host Capistrano Valley Christian today at 1:30 p.m. at Machado Field, in a San Joaquin League game. The Lancers will travel to The Webb School on Saturday for an 11 a.m. game. The Lancers are 1-2 to start league play.

Lancer girls 2-1 in Academy League play

The Avalon High girls soccer team has started Academy League play with two wins against one loss. The Lancers finished second in the league last year and will return to league play against defending Academy League champions, Samueli Academy on Jan. 20 at home, starting at 12:30 p.m.

The Lancers will host Santa Fe High in a non-league game on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Machado Field.
