The Avalon Lancers football team (11-0) made history last Friday when they beat the Mojave Mustangs 50-8 in the CIF Championship game winning its first football championship in the school’s history. After losing two years in a row in the semifinals and last year the loss being from Mojave, the Lancers made it their goal to go all the way and they did exactly that, celebrating an undefeated season.
The Lancers passing game this season was one of the best that they have ever had but this game they relied heavily on the run. Senior QB Jerod Long rushed for 160 yards and scored three times while senior running back Jose Silva also rushed for another 80 yards and added a touchdown to the scoring.
The Lancers were firing on all cylinders and were playing their best game of the season. The Lancers did not turn the ball over at all during the game, while Avalon’s defense forced multiple turnovers and recovered a fumble and blocked punt in the end zone accounting for two of the scores. Senior defensive end Harrison Hobbs tacked on two sacks to bring his season total to 34 1/2.
“This team was anchored by the best captains in football this year. Jerod Long, Jose Silva, Jason Cisneros and Harrison Hobbs set the tone and kept the team focused. There were no ‘what ifs’ due to the heart and work ethic of these four captains. We challenged our guys in the beginning of the season to make as little mistakes as possible and as a team we wanted to have perfect games. Our players went a step further and they gave us the perfect season,” said Coach Mike Forcella.
