The Avalon Boys Golf Team has finished the regular season with three consecutive wins and now have high hopes that the CIF Golf Committee will accept them into the playoffs as an At Large Entry. The Lancer Linksters defeated Webb, Fairmont Prep, and Cabrillo at home this past week and finished in 4th place in the San Joaquin League.
Avalon defeated Webb 188-199 on Monday, April 21 and then they beat Fairmont Prep 189-190 on Thursday, April 24 in the closest match in Avalon High School Golf history. These 2 victories meant that Webb and Fairmont would now have to share the league championship and Avalon, who took joy in playing the role of spoiler, would finish in 4th place in league play.
Seniors Jose Pedroza and Aaron Meza have been our top golfers all season long while Eduardo Zavala has been steady Eddie. Jacob Mello was our top golfer against Fairmont shooting a nice round of 3 over par 35 and Uriel Gonzalez was the hero of the day, coming in with a 39 and securing the 1-stroke victory.
There is no doubt that the Catalina Island Golf Course is a tough layout for our visiting teams, especially with the improved conditions of the course. The greens are in fine shape, but very fast and difficult because of the different angulations and slopes. As our players continue to improve and learn their home course the future can only get better.
On Friday, April 25 the Lancers closed out the regular season against Cabrillo High School at home. The Jaguars were no match for the Lancers, who won by a margin of 200-272. The Lancers advanced to the San Joaquin League Individuals Tournament, which took place on Monday, at Recreation Park, and Tuesday, at Skylinks, both in Long Beach.
Avalon started with 28 golfers on Monday and then cut to the top 12 for Tuesday. After Tuesday’s round the top four from this tournament will go on to compete in the CIF Individuals Tournament which takes place two weeks later. We are allowed to send 6 golfers to our League Individuals and we are excited to announce that Jose Pedroza, Aaron Meza, Jacob Mello, Eduardo Zavala, Uriel Gonzalez, and David Gonzalez will represent our school in this tournament.
Good luck to all six golfers and thanks to all those who have supported Avalon Junior Golf over the years. Your support is making a difference.
