The Avalon boys varsity basketball team finally got a taste of victory in their final preseason game against Santa Ana Valley, on Jan. 4, at home. The Lancers played even with the Falcons most of the first half, trailing 31-28 at the break.

However, the Lancer defense went on lockdown in the 3rd quarter, allowing only 2 points, while scoring 15. The 4th quarter was much the same with Avalon holding Santa Ana Valley to 6 points and the Lancers scoring 13, making the final score Avalon 56, Santa Ana Valley 39.

Senior Jacob Mello and Junior Erick Madriz were the leaders in this game on both ends of the court. Mello scored 20 points, grabbed 9 rebounds, and had 5 steals. Madriz scored 16 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, had 3 steals, and 2 blocks. Senior Joe Ruiz played his best game of the season dishing out 3 assists and providing tough defense at the top.

Junior Morgan Curiel was all over the court playing whatever position the team needed. Senior Brandon Tamayo provided the poise and calm that was required to seal the victory. Freshman Jackson Garcia gave us a much-needed offensive punch in the 2nd quarter. This was a total team victory and is hopefully a sign of things to come. It is now time for league competition and our next game is at home today, Friday, Jan. 10 at 5 p.m. against league rival Southlands Christian. Come on up and support your local high school hoopsters.
