The Avalon High boys basketball team saw its season come to an end on Wednesday at home, with a 69-53 loss to Anaheim High in the CIF-SS Division 5A playoffs. Darren Hall was lost to a sprained ankle in the second quarter.

The Lancers were able to capture an Express League championship after finishing league play with an 8-1 record. It was a strong finish for a team that started the season slow as they went through some growing pains.

The Avalon High girls team also qualified for the playoffs after taking third place in the Academy League. They were scheduled to play their playoff opener at Canyon High of Anaheim on Thursday afternoon (past the Islander press time).

While the winter sports have hit their playoff season, the spring sports are getting ready to play ball this weekend, as baseball and softball teams can begin regular season play starting Saturday. Boys volleyball will also get underway soon as their official start date is Feb. 17. Boys golf tees up their regular season starting Feb. 24. Keep an eye out for the Lancers’ spring teams.
