The Lady Lancers Basketball team continues to grow and get better as they defeat 3 more teams in league to become 5-0. This past week and a half they beat Capistrano Valley Christian twice and Newport Christian once to remain undefeated and tied for 1st place in league.
On May 3 Avalon faced Capistrano Valley Christian at home. Avalon with their stifling match up zone was able to take a 21-9 half time lead. Ten of the 12 girls for the Lady Lancers scored which led to a blowout of 52-32. Junior Virginia Soto scored 10 and Junior Hannah Hoefs had 9.
May 7 the Lady Lancers would travel to Newport to play the Seahawks of Newport Christian. Avalon would get out ahead with their fast pace play and lead at halftime 20-13. Newport fought hard in the second half and with Avalon down a few players due to splits because of multiple sports, Avalon tired and allowed the Seahawks back in. It wasn’t till the last 40 secs when Sophomore Vanessa Rodriguez sank a three-pointer to seal the game at 44-40 that the Lady Lancers could finally breathe and enjoy their 4th win of the season. Outstanding play by Soto with 21 points, 6 rebounds, 5 steals and Rodriguez with 8 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals help lead the way to victory.
May 10 led Avalon to travel to San Juan Capistrano to face Capistrano Valley Christian again. Avalon at full roster strength and on a four-game win streak felt good going into this game. Even though Avalon’s defense was stifling again they struggled to score in the first half and led by only 7; 20-13. The Lady Lancers would come alive in the second half out scouring the Eagles, 25-10 and go on and win 45-23. Again, Soto would lead the team with 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 steals, with Sophomore Lizette Cervantes following close behind with 10 points, 5 rebounds and Sophomore Kensley Flynn grabbing team leading 8 rebounds.
Lady Lancers are gearing up for this Friday’s game against Calvary Chapel Downey who they beat by only 8 points earlier in the season. With another win it will lead to an exciting showdown against the other undefeated team in the Academy League Pacifica Christian.
In the most recent CIF-SS polls, Avalon is ranked No. 8 in Division 5AA. Pacifica Christian is ranked No. 1 in Division 5A
