For the fourth time in recent years, an Avalon student received one of 30 Edison Scholarships. Edison International surprised Avalon High student Jasmin Jimenez with the good news during a school assembly on Tuesday, March 26.

She appeared to cry tears of joy when she got the news.

Jasmin plans to major in mechanical engineering.

“Growing up on Catalina Island, Jasmin personally saw the effects of climate change through extreme drought and a shortage of reservoir water. As a result, the community received a desalination plant. Jasmin’s curiosity inspires her to continue her mechanical engineering and materials science education. She hopes to apply her studies to create sustainable technology and machinery to help people worldwide,” according to energized.edison.com.

In her video for the scholarship, now available on energized.edison.com, she said she hadn’t decided on a college as she was waiting for her decision letters.

“But I would say if I got in, my two top schools would be UCLA or UC Irvine to pursue mechanical engineer and possibly also material science,” Jasmin said in her video.

“With that being said, I want to say thank you so much for this opportunity. It really does mean a lot,” she said.

“Jimenez is among 30 local high school students in Southern California Edison’s service area selected as Edison Scholars,” according to Southern California Edison.

“Each student will receive a $50,000 scholarship to further their academic stud ies in STEM at a U.S. college or university as well as an opportunity for a paid summer internship with SCE,” according to Southern California Edison. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

“Applicants must be high school seniors with at least a cumulative 3.0 GPA, plan to pursue studies in the STEM fields at a four-year accredited college or university and show financial need,” according to energized.edison.com.

The website said applicants have to live in SCE’s service area.

“Students from underserved communities and ethnic minorities are encouraged to apply,” according to energized.edison.com.

“Edison International has awarded more than $15 million in scholarships to 760 students through this program since 2006,” according to energized.edison.com.
