Catalina Island Medical Center’s Emergency Disaster Preparathon Nov. 5-7, 2015 will inform, train and equip island residents for a “worst case scenario.”
In the event of a natural disaster or large scale emergency (earthquake, flood, fire, biological attack) Catalina—with its geographical location—could be cut off from the mainland for days. Emergency services from overtown may be unable to assist Catalina residents because of concentrating resources in their own population centers.

Catalina and its residents could very well be “on their own.” The Emergency Disaster Preparathon begins with an information booth at Fall Fest on Thursday Oct. 22. Residents will be given the opportunity to order an emergency survival “Go Bag” at 50 percent off retail cost. Free literature including an important Survival Guide will help families learn how to make a plan, keep supplies, stay informed and be prepared.
A community meeting on Thursday, Nov. 5 at 6 p.m. in the City Council Chambers will include “first responders” from Avalon and Los Angeles County Fire, Los Angeles County Sheriff, Catalina Island Medical Center, CERT and other groups.
Free CPR training, basic first aid and Red Cross instruction on “How to Shelter in Place” will be offered at no cost.
Thanks to this Edison grant and the generous support of the Catalina Island Women’s Forum, Avalon Lions Club and the Catalina Island Medical Center Foundation families and neighbors will be safer and more prepared for an emergency or disaster.
