Residents and patients at Catalina Island Health were treated to a memorable experience when local falconer Dave Long visited our long-term care unit to share the ancient art of falconry.
During the demonstration, Dave introduced residents to birds of prey, including a peregrine falcon named PK and a Eurasian eagle owl named Ruby. He explained their unique behaviors, hunting instincts, and the special bond formed between falconer and bird. Dave also shared how birds of prey have influenced modern aviation, noting that the military studies bird flight and anatomy to help shape aircraft and improve aerodynamics.
Patients had the rare opportunity to see the birds up close, ask questions, and learn how falconry has been practiced for thousands of years across many cultures. The experience sparked curiosity, conversation, and joy among residents. For some, the visit brought back fond memories; for others, it was their first time seeing a bird of prey at such close range.
Experiences like this reflect Catalina Island Health’s commitment to enriching the lives of our long-term care residents through meaningful, engaging activities that support emotional well-being and connection to the natural world. Our staff and residents extend their sincere thanks to Dave Long for generously sharing his time, expertise, and remarkable birds with our community.
We would also like to extend a special thank you to Nick Morrow for capturing beautiful photographs of the event.
