A beloved Avalon landmark is preparing to welcome the community back through its doors. Steven and Brenda Hoefs have acquired the iconic El Encanto building on Catalina Island and will reopen the storied Spanish-style property as a vibrant, multi-use destination on Avalon’s Crescent Avenue.
For nearly a century, El Encanto has been one of the most recognizable buildings on the Avalon waterfront, its graceful architecture and sweeping harbor views forming part of the town’s visual identity. This summer, the historic name “El Encanto” will return, along with a bold new vision that honors the building’s legacy while reintroducing it as a gathering place for locals and visitors alike.
When it reopens, El Encanto will house a thoughtfully curated mix of experiences including a day spa and salon, a café in the courtyard, a wine bar overlooking the harbor, a retail boutique inviting you into the property, two exclusive villa suites for overnight guests, and an event venue unlike any other on the island.
“El Encanto has always been part of Avalon’s history,” said Steven Hoefs. “Our goal is to bring it back as a space where people can relax, connect and enjoy the very best of Catalina in one beautiful setting.”
Brenda Hoefs said the couple believes that honoring the history of El Encanto means opening the doors wide and welcoming everyone to experience the unique beauty it offers. Their vision for the property is best summed up as, “Live well, Celebrate well.”
“When you step foot onto the property, you know you are experiencing something very, very special,” she said. “The peacefulness and beauty of it all is truly breathtaking. We believe it is something everyone should enjoy,” Hoefs said.
“We want it to be a place of rest and restoration for locals and visitors, a place where you can enter in and be reminded of all that is good,” Hoefs said.
The Hoefs family has deep roots on Catalina Island and owns several well-known local businesses, reflecting a multi-generational commitment to Avalon and its community. Their plans for El Encanto continue that tradition, blending preservation, hospitality and local stewardship in one of the island’s most prominent locations.
