The 2013 Catalina Island Health Fair is about $700 from breaking even, according to organizer Dawn Sampson of the Catalina Island Medical Center.
The health fair is scheduled to take place from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., April 18 in the Casino Ballroom.
As the Islander reported last week, the health fair needs donations.
Sampson said the fair still has “a way to go” before reaching the break-even point. However, there have been some additional donations since Sampson issued last week’s request for donations.

She said the Avalon Rotary Club donated $500. The Rotary Club donates every year.
Even so, the Rotary donation is many times larger than the usual donations.
Sampson said the fair usually gets donations of $25 to $50, even up to $100.
She said the need for donations usually goes up to the day of the fair.
As previously reported, the health fair attracts about 10 percent of Catalina’s population, according to Sampson.
The event needs donations from residents and the business community to help with the cost of putting on the event. “The organizing committee is requesting donations of any amount to help with the cost of the venue, one-way boat tickets for mainland providers and various supplies needed at the fair,” Sampson said.
“We realize that many businesses are not able to provide health insurance to their employees.
Through participation in the local health fair, employees have an opportunity to receive quality health care screenings and information that can detect or help prevent medical problems at little or no cost,” Sampson said.
Donations are tax deductible.
Donations may be sent to Catalina Island Medical Center at P.O. Box 1563. Fair organizers ask that donors write “Health Fair” on the memo line of their checks.
