On the 7th a local sail boat, without the owner on board, broke loose from the mooring and hit another sailboat during a Gale Warning. Harbor Patrol was able to get the concrete sail boat under tow and secured it to 2 moorings away from other moored vessels.
On the 8th, the same concrete sail boat lost its stern line and Harbor Patrol towed the vessel, once again, out to a deeper row and secured it to 2 moorings.
On the 6th, Harbor Patrol received a medical call from a 45 ft. power vessel. Baywatch and Fire were dispatched and transported one person.
On the 8th, Harbor Patrol received word from the 45 ft. power vessel (from the 6th) that it was taking on water. Harbor Patrolmen pulled 1 adult, a child and 2 dogs off the vessel, which sunk on the mooring about 20 minutes later.
Avalon Harbor Patrol is diligent about warning boaters, in and near the harbor, that it is not safe to remain here during inclement weather, especially during NE storms. These are just a couple of incidents; others from the past have been much worse.
On the 20th, during another Gale event, four local youths were observed on camera running up and down the Casino dinghy dock ramp and onto the floats. A short time later, Harbor noticed on the same camera that the float had become untied. The Patrolmen were able to re-secure it prior to the float breaking loose and potentially causing a lot of damage. After viewing the camera footage, Harbor was able to identify the local youths who untied the dinghy dock extension. They are fortunate that none of them fell into the water; it could have been disastrous!
Float 1 from the Mole was removed and towed to the mainland for scheduled maintenance. The float should be back in about a month. The Express boats will use Float 4 in the meantime.
