Avalon will celebrate Labor Day weekend, provided state and county restrictions are lifted
The Avalon City Council this week unanimously approved a staff recommendation to cancel the annual Fourth of July Fireworks show.
A decision has not yet been made about the annual Fourth of July Parade. Staff will come back to the City Council at the second meeting in June to get a final decision about whether the parade will be held.
Community Services Director Dan Huncke told the council that staff believes they can do a smaller version of the annual parade.
Council Member Cinde MacGugan Cassidy made the motion, calling for a celebration on the Sunday of Labor Day weeekend, which was also part of the staff recommendation.
Mayor Anni Marshall added to the motion the provision that state and county COVID-19 related restrictions have been lifted by that time.
“It has been the general opinion of all the department heads that as of the writing of this staff report, there are still too many unknowns pertaining to what the City can expect in the way of state and county restrictions being lifted favorable to entertain the idea of a firework show on July 4th,” wrote Community Services Director Dan Huncke in his staff report to the May 18 council meeting.
“Staff feels strongly that the best time for the show would be when we could really celebrate Avalon being open with limited restrictions. We are proposing at this time that Labor Day weekend would be targeted to celebrate getting through the summer, first and foremost, safely for our community,” Huncke wrote.
Huncke told the council that “a wonderful community partner” was willing to pay for the cost of the fireworks show.
Huncke said staff believed the fireworks show could be done safely for the community, but they didn’t know how open it would be.
Council Member Michael Ponce said someone had suggested a home decorating contest.
Marshall said she would like to do a little parade.
