Thanks to the generosity of many of our members at the Mariner’s Outreach Foundation, our Foundation’s recently established scholarship fund has grown beyond all expectations. Member dues and contributions in addition to a generous contribution from the DRYC Auxiliary continue to fund field trips for all Avalon Schools students each year from the fourth through the 12th grade.
New Trade/Technical School Scholarship: We learned that many Island students are unable to attend a two or four college after graduating high school for financial and other reasons. This prompted our interest in finding how we might assist graduating students who have decided to pursue a career in one of the many lucrative trades. Subsequently, Flag member Bruce Kessler suggested that we provide financial assistance to graduating students who wish to apply for entrance to a trade or technical school. As a result, our first trade-technical scholarship was awarded to a graduating student seeking a career in a trade. Bruce funded this scholarship.
College Scholarships: Since announcing the Foundation’s first college scholarship in January, several members made contributions to our new scholarship fund. As a result, we provided three college scholarship for this year’s Avalon Schools’ graduating students.
Educational Field Trips: During the past two months, the Foundation sponsored educational field trips to the USS Iowa, the Cabrillo Marine Science Aquarium, the Autry Museum of the West and the Griffith Observatory. Additional Foundation sponsored field trips, including the 11th grade student’s annual visit to the Museum of Tolerance, are scheduled to follow in the fall.
Membership Information: Brochures with membership information are located in the brochure racks at the end of the Club’s main hallway.
