Thursday night the Joe Machado Field was the place to be. Spectators and players alike were treated to two great games. The first was between Eric’s on the Pier and Straight Up Builders.
Eric’s on the Pier was up first, and promptly scored four runs off a walk, three base hits and a triple from Robert Reyes. Straight Up Builders answered back with one. Brandon Franco had an amazing stop and throw out from short stop in the inning.
Eric’s on the Pier kept the pressure on with two more runs in the second. Elias Romero hit a double, and scored on a double from Leah Quarnstrom for Straight Up Builders. In the third, Eric’s on the Pier used two base hits and a double from Robert Reyes to bring home three more.
The fourth inning saw Robert Reyes again hit a triple and collect two RBIs for Eric’s on the Pier. Straight Up Builders got back on the board in the bottom of the inning. Two base hits and doubles from Gabriel Alvarado, Elias Romero, Briana Morones and Selina Morones added up to five runs.
Straight Up Builders added three more in the fifth off two errors, a sacrifice fly, a double from Chuy Sillas and a home run from Manny Hernandez. The sixth and final inning was wild. Eric’s on the Pier added eight insurance runs off an error, four base hits and home runs from Brandon Franco and Beto Martin. Down by nine, Straight Up Builders got their last at bat with time expired. Gabriel Alvardo started it off with a home run. Six base hits and a walk later, eight had scored brining the game within one run. With the tying run at second, a fly out ended the game with the score Straight Up Builders 18, Eric’s on the Pier 19.
For Straight Up Builders, Gabriel Alvarado, Elias Romero and Alex Romero were all three for three. Chuy Sillas and Manny Hernandez also collected three hits. Bart Glass, Briana Morones and Leah Quarnstrom contributed two hits. Jose Cuevas, Paul Daniel Romo, Selina Morones and Fabiola Sillas had one hit.
For Eric’s on the Pier, Robert Reyes was six for six. Beto Martin had five hits, while Brandon Franco was four for four. Aimee Casillas also collected four hits. Edmundo Vega contributed three hits, while Javier Jimenez had two.
The second game was also a close contest between Coyote Joe’s and Catalina Express. Coyote Joe’s was first up and got two on the board off two base hits and a double from Ryan Hinkley. Coyote Joe’s added another run in the second off back-to-back doubles from Hugh Bevins and Ron Bevins.
Catalina Express got a run in the bottom of the inning when they turned an error into a run. Catalina Express took the lead in the third with five runs off a walk, and error, four base hits, a double from Nestor Cubillas, and a home run from Mario Jimenez.
Coyote Joe’s put another run on the board in the fourth. Francisco Bravo hit a double in the effort, but was left stranded at second. For Catalina Express, Mario Jimenez hit his second home run of the night in the fourth. In the fifth, Ryan HInkley hit a double and scored on a sacrifice fly for Coyote Joe’s in the fifth. Down by two in the top of the seventh, Coyote Joe’s got their last at bat, but went quietly 1-2-3. Final score was Coyote Joe’s 5, Catalina Express 7.
For Coyote Joe’s, Ryan HInkley, Kenton Efhan and Francisco Bravo all had two hits. J.D. Laflin, Hugh Bevins and Ron Bevins contributed one hit.
For Catalina Express, Tyler Engel, Mario Jimenez and Reed Woodyard had two hits. With one hit each were Joe Hernandez, Nestor Cubillas, Stephen Marcy, Santiago Martinez, Stephanie Martinez and LeeAnn Little.
