Catalina Co-Ed Softball Opens Season

The Catalina Co-Ed Softball League opened the 2025 Spring season with Buoys & Gulls taking on Sunset Bar & Grill. Buoys & Gulls opened the game with back to back doubles from Jose Octavo and J.D. Laflin. Two base hits followed for two runs scored.

Sunset Bar & Grill started the bottom half of the inning with an inside-the-park home run from Juan Hernandez. A double from Tyler Engel and six base hits added up to a total of seven runs home. Defense ruled the next five innings despite a triple from Carmelo Lazaro in the fourth inning for Sunset Bar & Grill.

In the seventh and final inning Buoys & Gulls got back on the board with a solo home run from J.D. Laflin. It wasn’t enough, and the game ended with the score Buoys & Gulls 3, Sunset Bar & Grill 7.

For Buoys & Gulls J.D. Laflin was three for three. Jose Octavo, Weston Leonhardi, Jack Villagomez and Hugh Bevins contributed one hit. For Sunset Bar & Grill Carmelo Lazaro was two for two. Juan Hernandez, Gabriel Alvarado, Tyler Engel, Phil Lopez, Francisco Bravo, Sergio Vallejo, Melissa Schafer and Matilda Martinez all collected one hit.

Game two was between Straight Up Builders and Bravo’s Landscaping. Straight Up Builders had seven make it to the game, and was up first. They promptly hit five base hits for three runs.

Bravo’s Landscaping answered with a triple from Robert Reyes, who scored on the sacrifice fly ball.

Straight Up Builders continued to hit the ball in the second inning. Five base hits, a triple from Alvin Veal and a three RBI home run from Brandon Franco added five more runs. Bravo’s Landscaping answered with a double from Sebastian Sanchez, followed by a triple from Mario Jimenez and a base hit to have three runs cross the plate.

Straight Up Builders kept the pressure on with another three runs off a walk, three base hits and a double from Brandon Franco. In the bottom of the fourth Bravo’s Landscaping used an error, a base hit, a triple from Luis Lazaro and a double from Leo Aguilar to add three runs to their total.

Straight Up Builders put another on the board with the solo home run from Brandon Franco. In the sixth inning with time expired, Bravo’s Landscaping’s Robert Reyes hit an inside-the-park home run. Back to back doubles from Marco Gallegos and Aimee Casillas brought home another run, but they fell short with the score Bravo’s Landscaping 9, Straight Up Builders 12.

For Bravo’s Landscaping Robert Reyes was three for three. Stephanie Martinez contributed two hits. Marco Gallegos, Luis Lazaro, Sebastian Sanchez, Mario Jimenez, Leo Aguilar and Aimee Casillas collected one hit. For Straight Up Builders Chuy Sillas was five for five. Brandon Franco was four for four. Selina Morones also had four hits. Alvin Veal collected three hits, while Gustavo Aguilar and Julio Chavoya contributed two hits. Juan De La Cruz had one hit.
