CPUC gives Museum a water allocation

The Catalina Island Museum announced last week that it has been granted a water allocation for its new Ada Blanche Wrigley Schreiner Building. The museum’s new home will open to the public on Saturday, June 18. In anticipation of its grand opening, the Catalina Island Museum filed an informal complaint with the California Public Utilities Commission, which requested an exemption to Southern California Edison’s Rule 3 Water Tariff. The commission subsequently granted a fresh water allocation of 0.83 acre-feet per year (or approximately 0.002 acre-feet per day) for the museum’s new building located at 217 Metropole Ave.

According to the CPUC, the museum will be connected to the water system served by SCE’s existing and new desalination plants with a very low demand of approximately 0.2 percent of the daily desalination plant production capability. This allocation is still subject to SCE’s current Stage 2 water restrictions for 25 percent mandatory water rationing and all future measures set by SCE to reduce water usage.

A letter to the Catalina Island Museum from the CPUC stated, “The exemption is warranted for the Museum, since it is a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization, that serves the public good on Catalina Island by providing a significant educational and cultural resource for the citizens of Avalon and Los Angeles County. As such, the exemption would not seriously impact SCE’s water supply in whole or in part and is in the public interest.” The Ada Blanche Wrigley Schreiner Building will open on Saturday, June 18. The full Grand Opening Celebration runs through July 4th. Members of the museum will be welcomed a day earlier for the Members Preview on Friday, June 17.
