City plans April 21 ceremony to honor outstanding citizens

The city of Avalon plans a ceremony Saturday, April 21, to honor three outstanding members of Catalina who have given unselfishly, either through generous volunteerism or philanthropic endeavors to support Avalon youth, according to David Hart of the city Recreation Department. He said the honorees are selected through a five-person committee who look over the nominees and decide who is deserving of being enshrined on the Avalon Kids Park Dedication Wall. This years honorees are Sean Brannock-Arts, Earl Schrader-Football/Philanthropist, and the Blair Family-Philanthropist.

He said the public is invited to participate. The festivities will be held at at Avalon Kids Park at 10 a.m. and guests will have the opportunity to meet, learn about, and be inspired by these honorees.

Also, he said this year’s theme to the 4th of July Parade is America the Beautiful: Living the Beach Life. In other recreation news:

• Sign up for men and women summer basketball league has started. Games start first week in June, with men playing on Mondays and Wednesdays and the women playing on Tuesdays. Last day to register is June 1. Register online at recreation.cityofavalon.com or come by City Hall.

• T-ball Signups has started. Do you have a child age 3-8 years of age and you want them to learn the great sport of baseball. Last day to sign up is June 16 with first day of play being June 23.

• Catalina Island Outrigger Canoe Club is in full swing. If you would like to join the club please contact Dan Huncke at 310-510-0220 ext 230, or sign up online. If you want to see it first, come down to Wrigley stage Mon-Thurs at 5:30 p.m. where the friendly paddlers will meet you with a smile and with an Aloha spirit. CIOCC wants to remind everyone that “There is a seat for everyone.”
