With six teams this summer, the format for the tournament was a three-game road to the finals if you didn’t win the flip for the bye to the final game. For Coyote Joe’s and Chet’s Hardware, that was the story. Straight Up Builders won the flip for automatic entry into the tournament final.
Chet’s Hardware was up first against Coyote Joe’s in the first game of the night. At the end of the first inning both teams were scoreless. In the second inning Chet’s Hardware used a walk, an error, two base hits and a double from Juan De La Cruz to score five.
It wasn’t until the fifth inning that another run was scored. In the top of the inning Chet’s Hardware had five base hits and a three-run home run from Sebastian Sanchez to score a total of five more. J.D. Laflin made an amazing run to catch the ball and deny Tino Rodriguez an extra base hit.
In the bottom of the inning J.D. Laflin opened with a double and scored for Coyote Joe’s. in the top of the sixth Chet’s Hardware hit six base hits and an inside the park home run from Sebastian Sanchez to bring home four more runs. With time expired, Coyote Joe’s got their last at bat. A quick three outs ended the game with the score Coyote Joe’s 1, Chet’s Hardware 11.
For Coyote Joe’s J.D. Laflin, Nestor Cubillas and Alexandria Tran collected one hit. For Chet’s Hardware Juan De La Cruz and Briana Morones contributed three hits. Sebastian Sanchez, Alex Romero and Selina Morones had two hits. Marco Gallegos, Rolando Gonzalez and Tino Rodriguez contributed one hit.
Game two was a double header for Chet’s Hardware, this time against Straight Up Builders. Straight Up Builders was up first, and had a quick 1,2,3 inning. Chet’s Hardware had a walk, a fielder’s choice and a sacrifice fly to score two. Straight Up Builders tied it up in the second with two runs off a base hit and a double from Brandon Franco.
Chet’s Hardware matched the two runs in the bottom of the inning off a base hit and two errors. Chet’s Hardware added another run in the third off three base hits. Straight Up Builders got back on the board in the fourth with two runs off a base hit, a triple from Stephen Marcy and a double from Ryan Hinkley.
Chet’s Hardware rallied for five runs off two base hits, a walk, and triples from Marco Gallegos and Selina Morones. Andres Garcia hit a double for Chet’s Hardware in the sixth, but was left at second. In the top of the seventh Straight Up Builders Ryan Hinkley hit a two-RBI inside the park home run, but they fell short of the win. Final score Straight Up Builders 6, Chet’s Hardware 10.
