Staff report

For her continued contribution of “wisdom, talent and time,” local resident Val Schafer was recognized with Older American Award by Los Angeles County, Community Services Director Dan Huncke told the City Council Tuesday.

Schafer has been very active in Avalon and Catalina Island for many years (see the Catalina Islander next week for a profile).

In other action Tuesday, the City Council heard Aval Harbor Master J.J. Poindexter say a couple of cold days in May pushed down the boat count to 342, slightly lower than last year.

• The council heard Fire Chief Mike Krug say the Code Red notification system worked well during last week’s sewer emergency.

• The council directed the staff to explore options for Spanish language communications.

• Heard Mayor Anni Marshall ask city officials to explore the “expiration of taxi and commuter books. People have paid their money. Let’s get this rectified.”
