Catalina softball opens season with six teams

The 2023 summer season of Catalina Co-Ed Softball opened with a historic six teams. Game one was between the Lobster Trap and Coyote Joe’s. In the bottom of the first inning J.D. Laflin hit a double for Coyote Joe’s and scored on the double from Nestor Cubillas. The Lobster Trap got on the board in the second inning with six runs off a walk and seven base hits.
Coyote Joe’s added a run in the bottom of the third off a solo home run from Ben Guzman. The Lobster Trap got back on the board in the fourth inning, this time with seven runs off four base hits, doubles from Beto Martin and Margery Williams, and a two RBI home runs from Weston Leonhardi. In the bottom of the fourth, J.D. Laflin hit a double for Coyote Joe’s. He was later thrown out at the plate for the third out of the inning.
In the fifth, Christy Alegria-Flynn hit a double for The Lobster Trap, but was left stranded at second. Coyote Joe’s scored a run off the RBI double from Enrique Bravo in the bottom of the inning.
The Lobster Trap put the game away in the sixth inning. Three walks, three base hits, doubles from Joe Octavo, Beto Martin and Javier Jimenez, and a three-run home run from Weston Leonhardi brought home eight more. With their last at bat, Lobster Trap turned their third double play of the game to end the game with the score Coyote Joe’s 3, Lobster Trap 21.
For Coyote Joe’s, J.D. Laflin and Nestor Cubillas were two for two. Enrique Bravo, Ron Bevins, Ben Guzman and Jorge Leon all had one hit.
For The Lobster Trap Liza Vahai collected four hits. Beto Martin and Javier Jimenez had three hits. Jose Octavo, Weston Leonhardi, Mario Jimenez, Paul Daniel Romo, Kyle Ostentoski and Christy Alegria Flynn had two hits. Joe Talsky and Margery Williams collected one hit.
Game two was between Hamilton Cove Real Estate and Chet’s Hardware. Hamilton Cove Real Estate was up first, and put together four base hits and a double from Gabriel Alvarado to score three. Chet’s Hardware answered with four runs off a walk, two base hits, a double from Juan DeLaCruz and a triple from Selina Morones.
Hamilton Cove Real Estate added another run in the third when Robert Reyes hit a double and later scored. Chet’s Hardware stayed ahead with two runs off two base hits and doubles from Marco Gallegos and Juan DeLaCruz in the bottom half of the inning.
Inning four saw a solo home run from Leo Aguilar for Hamilton Cove Real Estate. Chet’s Hardware got busy in the bottom of the inning with two walks, four base hits, and a Grand Slam home run from Marco Gallegos to drive home seven.
In the sixth inning Hamilton Cove Real Estate added another run from Nick Morones’ solo home run. Chet’s Hardware added one more run in the bottom of the inning. With time expired, the game ended with the score Hamilton Cove Real Estate 6, Chet’s Hardware 14.
For Hamilton Cove Real Estate, Nick Morones was three for three. Robert Reyes and Leo Aguilar had two hits. Gabriel Alvarado, Reed Woodyard, Omar Aguilar, Marisa Morones and Aimee Casillas all contributed one hit.
For Chet’s Hardware, Selina Morones was three for three. Marco Gallegos, Sebastian Sanchez and Juan DeLaCruz all collected two hits. Alex Romero, Andres Garcia, Rolando Gonzalez and Apples Carrillo all had one hit.
Game three was a tight contest between Straight Up Builders and Bravo’s Landscaping. Straight Up Builders was up first, and Stephen Marcy promptly hit a double and later scored. Bravo’s Landscaping answered with four runs off a walk, two base hits, a double from Justin Hernandez, and a two-run home run from Tyler Engel.
Alvin Veal opened the second with a triple for Straight Up Builders, but was left stranded at third. Straight Up Builders took the lead in the third inning with five runs off an error, a walk, a base hit, a Grand Slam home run from Ryan Hinkley, followed by a solo shot from Brandon Franco. Bravo’s Landscaping tied it up in the bottom of the inning with two runs off two errors and a double from Justin Hernandez.
Alvin Veal opened the fourth with a double, and scored on the double from Jim Hinkley for Straight Up Builders. Bravo’s Landscaping tied it up in the bottom of the inning with the solo home run from Tyler Engel.
Straight Up Builders went ahead in the fifth inning with two runs off back to back triples from Chuy Sillas and Stephen Marcy. Bravo’s Landscaping got their last at bat, and opened with a run off back to back doubles from Billy Boyd and Alex Herrera. With the tying run at third, Straight Up Builders got a ground out to secure the win. Final score Bravo’s Landscaping 8, Straight Up Builders 9.
For Bravo’s Landscaping, Justin Hernandez, Tyler Engel, Alex Herrera and Judy Quarnstrom were two for two. Marcus Watts, Santiago Martinez and Billy Boyd collected one hit.
