Gabriel Hernandez officially obtained pro golf status to play on the Asia Tour

Catalina Island native Gabriel “Gabe” Hernandez, nicknamed “The Catalina Kid,” has officially obtained professional golf status to play on the Asia Tour through the Asian Development Tour.

Born and raised on Santa Catalina Island, Gabriel has been playing golf at Catalina Island Golf Course since he was 10 years old. He is the son of Larry and Wendy Hernandez, who are both Catalina natives. His father introduced him to the game while working on the golf course part-time as a groundskeeper. Catalina Island Golf Course is known as the oldest golf course this side of the Mississippi, and Gabe is proud to call it home.

Starting this Fall 2019, Gabriel will compete on the tour circuits, which have events in Malaysia, Thailand, Bangkok, Indonesia, and other countries across South Asia. Asian Tour events are viewed by millions in both the U.S. and Asia.

Prior to competing on the tour, Gabriel plans to qualify for a series of State Open Championships where he will proudly represent Catalina Island in 4 different states.

Gabriel is seeking the support of the island companies and individuals who would like to see him one day represent Catalina Island on the PGA tour.

Gabriel graduated from Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) in 2018. While earning his degree in Accounting, he competed on the PVAMU golf team. Gabriel finished his college career with a 71.3 scoring average and 1 major collegiate win.

Since turning pro, Gabriel has signed with G6 Sports & Entertainment Group (www.theg6agency.com/golf) for golf representation.

“We are excited to add Gabriel to the G6 family. Not only is he a great player that is full of potential, but Gabe’s story of being the first professional golfer to come from Catalina Island is very compelling.

The fact that he has been able to elevate his game to the professional level from a small island, and on a 9-hole course that does not even have a driving range, is amazing,” said a representative from G6 Sports & Entertainment Group.
