Catalina Islander has a new office assistant

The Catalina Islander this week welcomes its new office assistant, Kristy Throndson.

Kristy has lived on Catalina Island for the last nine years.

The transplanted East Coaster grew up in New Jersey.

She attended college in Baltimore and earned a bachelor’s degree in fine arts with an emphasis in painting.

“I make jewelry on the side and I have an online shop called “Catalina Inspired,” and so I still do a lot of artwork,” she said.

“However, I’ve worked in many offices back when I lived in New Jersey and New York, so I am comfortable with this kind of employment,” she said.

So what brings her here?

“I always had the dream of living on a sailboat and cruising around the world,” she said. “I thought Catalina would be my first of many stops. But then I fell in love with Catalina and I’m still here.”

She said when she first moved to Catalina she enjoyed living on a sailboat.

“It was great, but it was cold in the winter,” she said.

It was about five years ago that Kristy met her husband, Clint Palmer, a shore boat captain for Island Enterprises and owner of his own fishing charter business, Fishin’ Funatics, at Luau Larry’s.

“We’ve been married for four years and we have a daughter, Sierra, who attends Catalina Kid Ventures and will turn three next week.”

Since coming to live on the Island, Kristy has worked at Stacy’s Cards and Gifts on Sumner Avenue, the Hotel Vincente on Marilla and she currently works at the Buena Vista Hotel part time.

She said she still enjoys living in Avalon.

“I love being close to the ocean and being able to hike and kayak and seeing such beautiful surroundings,” she said.

“I like being able to share those experiences with my family,” she said.

“I look forward to getting to know the people of Avalon even better while working at the Islander and discovering Catalina from a whole new perspective,” she said.
