Nearly 12% of the United States population has diabetes. That is approximately 38.4 million people. It is prevalent enough that you likely know, or are related to, someone who is diabetic.

To better understand diabetes, Catalina Island Health has asked Dr. Aimee Warren to share information about it during an upcoming installment of its free Community Health Talk. Understanding Diabetes with Dr. Warren will take place on Monday, Feb. 24, from 6-7 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Avalon City Hall.

Dr. Warren will share information about diabetes, a chronic long-lasting health condition that affects how your body turns food into energy. She will explain the different types, describe how it is diagnosed and what is done to treat it. Most importantly, she will share risk factors and tips on how to prevent it. To round it out, she’ll give examples of healthy food choices and other tips for preventing and managing the disease.

All attendees will also have the opportunity to take a free glucose test. This non-fasting glucose test measures blood sugar and helps determine how well the body is processing blood sugar after a meal or snack. These test results can help your healthcare provider determine if you need treatment and what treatment options are best for you.

Questions are encouraged throughout the presentation. Spanish translation will be offered.
