Buoys & Gulls gets upset win over #1 Bravo’s Landscaping

The Catalina CoEd Softball tournament began and all four teams came to play! These were the best two games of the season.
Game one had League Champions Bravo’s Landscaping take on Buoys & Gulls. Buoys & Gulls was up first and J.D. Laflin opened the game with a triple. A walk and a base hit brought him home. Ryan Adkins followed with a three RBI home run.
Bravo’s Landscaping answered with two runs off a walk, an error and three base hits. Bravo’s Landscaping added another run in the second off the RBI triple from Marco Gallegos. With two out in the third and a runner on, J.D. Laflin collected two RBIs from his home run for Buoys & Gulls.
Bravo’s Landscaping tied it up in the bottom of the third. Luis Lazaro hit a triple. Two walks and two errors brought home a total of three in the inning. Buoys & Gulls left bases loaded in the fourth.
Bravo’s Landscaping got their first lead of the game in the bottom of the inning. Marco Gallegos hit a solo home run. Three base hits brought home the second run of the inning.
The lead shifted back to Buoys & Gulls in the fifth inning. A base hit and two walks had the bases loaded for J.D. Laflin. He promptly hit it out of the park for a Grand Slam. With two outs and one on, Ryan Adkins hit his second home run of the night, this time for two RBIs.
Bravo’s Landscaping kept it close in the bottom of the inning. Three base hits and a double from Marco Gallegos brought home three runs. In the sixth and final inning Buoys & Gulls were kept scoreless.
Down by one run, Bravo’s Landscaping got their last at bat. With two outs, two base hits followed. A foul ball added excitement, as the tying run would have crossed the plate. It was not to be, and a fly to short ended the game. Final score Bravo’s Landscaping 11, Buoys & Gulls 12.
For Bravo’s Landscaping Marco Gallegos was three for three. Luis Lazaro, Brayan Aguilar, Stephanie Martinez and Aimee Casillas collected two hits. Robert Reyes, Leo Aguilar and Santiago Martinez contributed one hit.
For Buoys & Gulls J.D. Laflin and Rachel McCormick were three for three. Weston Leonhardi and Ryan Adkins collected two hits. Ben Guzman, Jose Barreras, Edmundo Vega and Alexa Morones had one hit.
Game two was a thriller between Sunset Bar & Grill and Straight Up Builders. Tyler Engel opened the game for Sunset Bar & Grill with a double. Doubles from Gabriel Alvarado and Juan Hernandez, along with a base hit, brought home three. Gustavo Aguilar had a great catch in right center to end the threat from Sunset Bar & Grill.
In the bottom of the inning Straight Up Builders had a base hit, a double from Nestor Cubillas and a sacrifice fly, to score a run. Straight Up Builders took the lead in the bottom of the second. James Hall hit a two RBI inside-the-park home run. After an error and a base hit, Julio Chavoya hit an inside-the-park home run to collect three RBIs.
Straight Up Builders added two more to their lead in the third from two walks and two base hits. Sunset Bar & Grill got back in the game in the fourth when three runs scored off a walk, three base hits, and a double from Gilbert Hernandez. Two base hits and a walk in the bottom of the inning brought home two runs for Straight Up Builders.
Sunset Bar & Grill crept closer in the fifth with three runs scoring on two errors, a base hit and doubles from Gabriel Alvarado and Cailin Lopez. Uriel Castillo hit an inside-the-park home run for Straight Up Builders in the bottom of the inning.
In the seventh and final inning with one out, Tyler Engel hit a triple for Sunset Bar & Grill. He was left at third. Down by one run, Straight Up Builders got their last at bat. An error and a walk started the inning. A base hit brought home the tying run. With runners at first and second, a ground ball to third got the second out, but the runner beat the throw to first to avoid the double play, and the winning run scored. Final score of this thrilling game was Sunset Bar & Grill 12, Straight Up Builders 13.
For Sunset Bar & Grill Phil Lopez was three for three. Tyler Engel also had three hits. Gabriel Alvarado, Francisco Bravo, Juan Hernandez and Gilbert Hernandez collected two hits. Carmelo Lazaro, Caitlin Lopez, Melissa Schafer and Matilda Martinez had one hit. For Straight Up Builders Julio Chavoya was three for three. Uriel Castillo and James Hall had two hits. Chuy Sillas, Nestor Cubillas, Brandon Franco, Juan De La Cruz, Gustavo Aguilar and Chela Hernandez contributed one hit.
