Benefit comes to life this weekend

“To see and hear The Phantom of the Opera performed in this way, in one of the greatest venues in the world, is a very unique experience,” said Grammy Award-winning conductor Richard Kaufman.  “All of the planets will be aligned on May 16th!”
Cited as one of the greatest horror films of the silent era, The Phantom of the Opera will be featured during the Catalina Island Museum Silent Film Benefit on Saturday, May 16.

Cited as one of the greatest horror films of the silent era, The Phantom of the Opera will be featured during the Catalina Island Museum Silent Film Benefit on Saturday, May 16.
Live musical accompaniment by a 30-piece symphony orchestra, organist Dennis James and soprano vocalist Lisa Vroman will be led by Kaufman in the historic Avalon Casino Theatre. The museum’s benefit is one of the most highly anticipated events of the year.
“Once again we will bring an all-star orchestra from the mainland comprised of players from the Los Angeles Opera, the Pacific Symphony, and a number of studio musicians who regularly play on film and television scores,” said Kaufman.
“After we performed City Lights last May, a number of the musicians who were in that orchestra, contacted me to say what a great time they had, and enthusiastically requested to please be included next time.
So, there will be a large number of musicians returning this year, and several plan to stay a couple of extra days simply to enjoy the island.” The Phantom of the Opera is a classic story of unrequited love.  Lon Chaney stars as the Phantom, a disfigured madman living in the catacombs below the Paris Opera House.
Obsessed with a young opera singer and determined to make her a star, the Phantom terrorizes the opera house and those who enter it.
Unfortunately, the young singer does not feel the same, forcing him to go to extremes.
Experience the unique opportunity to view the original 1925 version of The Phantom of the Opera in the Avalon Casino Theatre with live musical accompaniment at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 16. The 28th Annual Catalina Island Museum Silent Film Benefit demonstrates the museum’s mission to bring history, art, music and film to the community of Avalon and its visitors.
Attend in period dress and win a prize for best-dressed individual or best-dressed couple. A prize will also be awarded for best character from the film.
