The Avalon Youth and Government delegates just returned from Camp Roberts in San Miguel, and it was a big learning weekend for all of them. It was a different environment, and it pushed many of them in ways they hadn’t experienced before. But through the uncertainty of being somewhere unfamiliar and taking on something completely new, they pushed through and found their voice.
They learned how bills move through the legislative process. They sat in committee rooms, watched debates, and even got up to speak in front of hundreds of students from across the state. It took courage, and most importantly, they supported each other every step of the way.
Now that they are back, the delegates will begin drafting their bill. Their next step is attending Camp Oakes in December, where they’ll keep developing their ideas before the statewide conference in Sacramento.
“Avalon should be proud of these students,” Yesenia De la Rosa said. “They showed real growth, resilience, and leadership throughout the weekend.”
