The city of Avalon was scheduled to submit a grant application to the California Division of Boating and Waterways on Thursday, Aug. 1.

The city is seeking money to design and build a replacement for the Pier End Float System, according to a recent staff report by Assistant Harbormaster Kevin Schmidt and Administrative Analyst Aliana Gonzales.

“If awarded, the City will receive $75,000 for the Harbor Fund,” Schmidt and Gonzales wrote.

“The goal of this project is to replace the current aged and worn infrastructure to improve public shore-access for recreational boaters,” Schmidt and Gonzales wrote.

However, before the city council apply for the grant, Boating and Waterways required a City Council resolution designating City Manager David Maistros (or someone designated by Maistros) as an authorized signer.

This was a Consent Calendar item on the July 16 council agenda. The council approved the Consent Calendar unanimously, without discussion of the items.

“The City applied for, and was awarded, funding through this grant program in 2017 for the replacement of the Pump-out Float Project which was completed spring 2023,” Schmidt and Gonzales wrote.

“The City applied again in 2023 and was awarded funding for the Club Dinghy Dock Replacement Project,” Schmidt and Gonzales wrote.

“The project is currently in the beginning stages of development,” Schmidt and Gonzales wrote.

“The grant program is comprised of 75% grant funds, 25% local match. The total project cost is not to exceed $ 300,000 to maintain eligibility for the Tier I Grant. The local match will not exceed $75,000,” Schmidt and Gonzales wrote.
