Coastal Commission requires cities to plan for sea level change
The city of Avalon is soliciting public input on developing potential solutions to mitigate against future sea level rise and climate change. Information on the city’s effort and the public survey can be found at www.avalonslr. The survey is open until Nov. 30. The city is asking the public to take the survey.
The Coastal Commission requires all coastal jurisdictions to update their local coastal program to address sea level rise and climate change. The city received grants from Caltrans and the Coastal Commission for its LCP update.
The city is also using this public input to plan short-term and long-term coastal hazard mitigation that is on-going with other various efforts.
The first step is a community survey that will identify community priorities for typical coastal mitigation strategies – protection, accommodation and retreat.
Once the survey is complete, the consultant engineering team will develop various strategies, which are anticipated to be presented to the community in spring 2021.
The city encourages all of its citizens to go to www.avalonslr and get informed and take the survey by Nov. 30. Questions should be submitted on www.avalonslr.com, and either the city or the engineering team will respond. Hard copies of the survey are available at City Hall.
The city appreciates the citizens’ time for their valuable input.
