The Avalon School Middle School girls volleyball team reached the Long Beach Unified School District Championship game with a semifinal sweep of 25-17, 25-9, 25-19. The Lancers came up short, 3-1, in the championship game, but Head Coach Carlos Martinez praised the girls for an outstanding season.
“These girls worked so hard and really stepped it up after moving up a division,” Martinez said. “We are the smallest middle school in the district but we proved that we can handle all of the competition.”
The Lancers were led in hitting by Hennessy Rios, Galilea Lerma, and Cassidy Engel who each had more than 10 kills in the playoffs. Joanna Castro had 8 blocks.
Defense and passing was anchored by Melanie, Jaime, and Eliza Hernandez who each had more than 25 digs and wouldn’t let the ball drop.
And Amilia Noriz ran the offense with setting and recorded more than 40 Assists. The Lancers went undefeated during the regular season, despite getting moved up to a higher division after going undefeated last year.
